On many occasions Rank Xerox has pioneered best practice. As already mentioned, it is generally recognised to have popularised benchmarking. Similarly, it has often been the benchmark for Kaizen and World-Class Management. This applies to tools used to analyse management performance. In the 1970s before personal computers and spreadsheet packages were to be found on every desktop, Rank Xerox was using proprietary software similar to the modern spreadsheet. Twenty years later, Rank Xerox is using personal computer packaged software, like everyone else. However, for the older managers it has been a painful experience to adjust to the popular graphical user-based systems, having grown up on proprietary character-based software. Measurement has been an important part of Rank Xerox’s culture. There has probably always been a strong financial focus on achieving planned results. However, ten years of pioneering best practice quality has meant that measurement has permeated every aspect of the business.

There is evidence of information overload, with personnel not able to react to the plethora of quantitative data. This is beginning to be addressed with the latest generation of object oriented computer systems. For example, John Meecham demonstrated the latest object oriented software available to the UK service organisation. It allowed intuitive, powerful and rapid benchmarking across the UK for a series of core metrics. Eventually, it is hoped that similar databases across Europe will be linked. It will be interesting to see how the new internal benchmarking and the proposed ABC systems allow Rank Xerox to improve performance. These are in essence ex post (historic data) rather than ex ante (future focused). By contrast, Japanese systems are dominated by ex ante systems.
